Leave Christchurch and follow the Waimakariri River into the mountains, climbing through beech forest to Arthur's Pass village. Stop at the Otira Gorge lookout, take a short alpine walk, and keep an eye out for kea. The TranzAlpine rail journey is optional and can be added separately.
